Nigerian rebels destroy oil pipelines
09 03 2010 Rebels in Nigeria have destroyed several oil pipelines in the south of the country. The rebel movement MEND put a major installation of the US oil company Chevron out of action. The company has cut production by 100,000 barrels a day to prevent an oil spill.

MEND has been waging an armed struggle for a fair division of the region's oil revenue since 2006. Over the past three years, the unrest in the Niger delta has led to a 25 percent reduction in Nigeria's oil production.
China and Russia criticise North Korea
09 03 2010 China and Russia have sharply criticised an underground nuclear test by North Korea. Russia says the test contravenes a United Nations resolution. The Chinese foreign ministry said the country is absolutely against the test. Earlier the United States, Japan and Great Britain also condemned the test.

Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende says the Netherlands will call for international condemnation. Mr Balkenende argues the test is not in the interests of the world community nor those of North Korea itself. Later today, the United Nations Security Council will convene to discuss the matter in an emergency meeting.

This is the second time North Korea has tested a nuclear weapon. The first time was in October 2006. The bomb that was tested today is more powerful and more refined than the one used three years ago. Pyongyang has also tested three short-range missiles simultaneously.
British military failed to report loss of sensitive data
09 03 2010 The British armed forces failed to report that hundreds of air force officers could be vulnerable to blackmail following the theft of three computer disks. The disks disappeared from an air force base last September. The matter was reported immediately, but the ministry of defence failed to mention that the disks carried the vettting records of about 500 officers. This includes information on drugs use, extra-marital affairs, visits to prostitutes and debts.

Vetting is the process of assessing an individual for higher security clearance. The military leadership failed to report this to the British government. A former air force officer recently brought the matter to light. He says foreign secret services could use the information to blackmail officers.
